Machines suitable for engraving cylindrical objects

Whether you are exploring new functions on your existing machine or considering purchasing a new one for this type of production, various CO2 Wattsan machines can be used for this task, including the 0503, 6090, 1290, and 1610 models. In this article, we will focus on working with the Wattsan 1610 LT, but the crucial component is the presence of a rotary device rather than the specific machine model.

Types of rotary devices

There are three main types of rotary devices: shaft, roller, and front and rear headstocks. If you plan to engrave glasses, shot glasses, cups, or rings, a rotary device with a clamping headstock is the best option. This is the type we will use in this guide. It weighs approximately 5 kg and can accommodate products with a maximum length of 850 mm. Before beginning the engraving process, the rotary device must be properly connected, and the design files must be prepared.

Step 1: preparing the design files

The engraving process starts with preparing the design files. The outcome largely depends on the product and the design chosen. There are different engraving methods, such as inscription, image engraving, and seamless (butt-to-butt) engraving, each with its own specific requirements. If using an image, it must first be converted to a black-and-white bitmap format for optimal results.

Step 2: installing the rotary device

The rotary device should be positioned parallel to the machine. In some cases, a custom stand made from plywood may be required for proper alignment. Additionally, the stepper motors on the machine and the rotary device must be identical. For example, if your stepper motors are single-phase, the rotary tool should also have a single-phase motor. Once connected, the number of pulses per revolution must be configured. If there is direct transmission from the stepper motor shaft to the chuck, you can use the number of pulses specified on the stepper motor driver. Finally, measure the diameter of the object and enter it into the appropriate field in the software.

Step 3: aligning the workpiece

When placing the object in the rotary device, ensure that the laser beam aligns precisely with the center of the rotational axis. In the software, a test function labeled “diameter” will appear. Set the speed for one complete revolution, mark the starting position, and press OK. The rotary device should make one full rotation and return to the original position. If the marks do not align, the pulse count may be incorrect, or the entered diameter may not be accurate.

Helpful tips for optimal results

  • Use rubber seals when installing the workpiece to prevent slipping.
  • Ensure uniformity: If the workpiece has varying diameters, position it so that the wall remains parallel to the X-axis. If necessary, place a support under the object.
  • Engrave on a dry or wet surface: A wet surface can reduce roughness. Using a soapy solution or a damp cloth may improve the engraving quality.
  • Avoid distortions: Check the edges for wrinkles or bubbles to achieve a smooth engraving surface.
  • Experiment: Each material reacts differently to laser engraving, so testing different settings can help refine the final results.
