RDWorks is an essential software tool that facilitates communication between your computer and a CO2 laser machine. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the installation process, setting up the system, and working with files. By the end, you’ll have a solid foundation to start working with RDWorks.

Installation
To begin, download and open the RDWorks installation file. Follow these steps:
- When the installation menu appears, click “Install” and wait for the process to finish.
- Once installed, connect your laser machine to your computer using a USB cable and select “Install USB Driver”.
- After installing the driver, choose your preferred language. In our case, we selected English.
- Adjust the following fields in the setup menu:
• Type: Leave this unchanged.
• Origin: Choose the starting position based on your machine’s limit switch. For most Wattsan models, the origin is the top-right corner. Exceptions include the Wattsan 0503 and 6040 models, which use the top-left corner.
• Size: Select your preferred measurement system (millimeters or inches).
- Click “Install” to apply the settings, then exit. The installation is now complete!

System settings
After installation, an RDWorks shortcut will appear on your desktop. However, the program won’t yet recognize your machine’s specific settings, so you’ll need to configure it. Follow these steps:
- Open RDWorks and navigate to “Config” > “System Settings.”
- Under “Page Size,” set the width and length of your machine’s working area.
- If you’re using a dual-head machine like the Wattsan 1610 Duos, select “2” in the “Head num” field.
- Enable “Auto fresh page settings” to automatically adjust the page size whenever the machine is connected.
- Verify or adjust the starting position in the “Homing position” field, if needed.
Now that your system settings are configured, let’s explore the RDWorks interface.

Interface overview
RDWorks features three main sections:
- Toolbar (Left panel):
This is where you can create and edit lines, objects, and text. It includes tools for mirroring, centering, and creating matrix copies.
- Settings Panel (Top):
This panel allows you to create new files, import/export files, undo/redo actions, zoom, and rotate objects. It also contains advanced tools like angle adjustment.
- Cutting and Engraving Panel (Right):
Here, you can control cutting and engraving settings.

File import
RDWorks supports both raster and vector file formats, such as BMP, JPG, AI, PLT, DXF, and more. However, it does not support CorelDraw files directly. If you’re working with CorelDraw, export your designs in one of the compatible formats.
For practice, download a sample file online. Keep in mind that these files should only be used for learning purposes and not for commercial projects.
To import a file into RDWorks:
- Open the “File” menu and select “Import…” or use the dedicated button in the top-left corner.
- Select your file. In the dropdown menu, leave the “Supported files1” option unchanged for the best compatibility.

Working with a controller and USB drive
You can operate your laser machine in two ways: through a direct computer connection or via a USB drive. For this guide, we’ll focus on using a Ruida controller as an example.
- Saving files:
Save your design files in the .rd format (not .rld) for compatibility with the machine.
- Transferring files to USB:
Copy your .rd file to a USB drive. On the RuiDa panel, use the following buttons:
• “UFileOutput” to save files from the controller to the USB.
• “SaveToUFile” to upload files from the USB to the controller.
- Note: files on the USB cannot be run directly. They must first be saved to the controller’s memory.
- Uploading files to the machine:
• Insert the USB into the machine and select “File” > “U Disc Memory” on the panel.
• Find your file and press “Enter” to copy it to the machine’s memory.
- Running the job:
In the “Laser Work” window, press “Start” to begin cutting or engraving. Before starting, ensure the machine head is positioned correctly using the “Position” dropdown or the arrow buttons.
Use the “Origin” button to set the starting point manually.
