Replacing a frequency converter is not enough—it also needs to be properly configured. In this article, we will guide you through the process step by step.

Why adjusting your converter is important
In most cases, a frequency converter does not require additional adjustment when purchasing a CNC router, as it is pre-configured by the manufacturer before shipment. However, understanding the setup process is crucial in case the converter needs to be replaced or reconfigured due to a malfunction.
At Wattsan, we use frequency converters from BEST, ensuring reliable performance across our CNC router lineup.

Accessing the settings menu
To begin, press the Escape button to enter the settings menu. We will focus on the key parameters that require adjustment.

Function 001: current intensity
To enter any function, press Enter. Function 001 sets the current intensity in Amperes. The correct value depends on your CNC router’s spindle specifications, which can be found on the spindle ID plate. Once the correct number is entered, press Enter to confirm and exit.
Function 002: spindle voltage
This parameter determines the spindle voltage, which can be either 220V or 380V, depending on the spindle model installed on your machine.
Function 003: spindle frequency
The spindle frequency must be set according to the ID plate specifications.
Function 021: maximum frequency limitation
This parameter typically matches the frequency set in Function 003 and serves as an upper limit.
Stage control for rotation frequency (functions 030–037)
Wattsan CNC routers support stage control for spindle rotation frequency, allowing for eight predefined speed levels. The corresponding values for each stage are:
• Function 030 – 50 Hz
• Function 031 – 100 Hz
• Function 032 – 140 Hz
• Function 033 – 200 Hz
• Function 034 – 250 Hz
• Function 035 – 300 Hz
• Function 036 – 350 Hz
• Function 037 – 400 Hz
Additional functions
Function 056: display indication
This parameter must be set to 4, which is the optimal value for Wattsan routers.
Function 057: rotation count per frequency unit
The required value depends on the spindle model. However, for most Wattsan machines, the standard ratio is 60 rotations per frequency unit.
Function 058: carrier frequency
For Wattsan spindles, the default setting is 9000 Hz. If the spindle produces an unusual noise, you can lower it to 8700 Hz. If the spindle underperforms, increasing it to 9300 Hz may help.
Function 064: frequency source
This parameter determines where the frequency value is taken from. Set it to 3 to allow the system to operate based on predefined speeds.
Function 065: source of working commands
This setting defines where the control signal originates. Enter 1 to ensure proper operation.
Function 067: reverse control
This function manages counterclockwise spindle rotation. Since values vary by converter model, refer to the converter manual for precise settings. However, for most Wattsan machines, this should be set to 0.
Special function 070
In our example, the default value is 40.10. This parameter must be configured according to the converter manual for optimal performance.
Conclusion
Properly configuring a frequency converter ensures stable and efficient operation of your CNC router. While many settings are pre-adjusted by the manufacturer, understanding how to access and modify these parameters can be crucial for troubleshooting and maintenance. By following this step-by-step guide, you can confidently set up your frequency converter and optimise your CNC machine’s performance.
